International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC)
The Bath Charter Township Ordinance Committee is currently researching the possibility of adopting the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC).
The purpose of the IPMC is to maintain a minimum level of safety and sanitation for both the general public and the occupants of a structure and to maintain a building’s structural and weather-resistant performance.
The IPMC deals with all types and ages of structures and also establishes minimum requirements for the maintenance of property areas, premises and structures. The standards of the IPMC are minimal in nature, consisting of a reasonable level of protection for the health and safety of all occupants.
The owner of premises will be responsible for maintaining the structure and the exterior of the property. If premises are not in a sanitary and safe condition, a person will not be allowed to occupy as owner-occupant or permit another person to occupy the premises. The occupants themselves are responsible for keeping the dwelling unit in a clean, sanitary and safe condition.
There are several area municipalities that have either adopted or are also researching the idea of adopting the International Property Maintenance Code so as to provide for a safer community.
