Property Taxes

Tax Bills – As a taxpayer, you have the responsibility to verify that payment is being made on the correct property description.  The tax amounts listed on the tax notice are levied on the property described at the top of the bill, left hand side, and are for the indicated tax year.  Please note that failure to receive a tax bill or failure to deliver timely payment does not waive interest or penalty charges.  The billing and payment cycle for taxes is as follows:

Tax Period

Billed/Mailed

Due

Summer Taxes July 1 September 14
Winter Taxes December 1 February 14

Payments – Please make checks or money orders payable to Bath Charter Township.  Checks are accepted as conditional payment until the check clears the bank.  Partial payments can be made any time after the initial bill is sent.

There is a secure, 24-hour drop box located next the Township Hall entrance and may be used for any township business, including tax payment.

The Township mails out only one bill per tax cycle.  If you receive a tax bill, but you have an escrow, you must contact your mortgage company to make sure the bill is paid.  If you did not receive a tax bill and you do not have an escrow, please call us and we will mail you an additional copy.

Summer Tax Deferments - For qualified residents, you may defer your summer tax bill until February 14 without penalty.  For an application to defer, please contact the Treasurer’s Office or download the application from the State of Michigan website.  To qualify, your household income must be less than $40,000.00 for the prior calendar year AND meet at least one of the following:

  • Senior Citizen (62 years or older)

  • Paraplegic or quadriplegic

  • Eligible service personnel, Eligible veteran, Eligible widow/widower

  • Blind person

  • Totally and permanently disabled

Sewer Billings

Many Bath Township residents are connected to the public sanitary sewer services provided by the Southern Clinton County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCCMUA). Billing for these services are provided by the Treasurer’s Office. Homes are billed by a flat rate based on a single “residential equivalent unit” or REU. The current REU rate is $65 per quarter.

The sewer billing schedule is as follows:

Service Coverage

Billed

Due

January – MarchDecember 15January 15
April – JuneMarch 15April 15
July – SeptemberJune 15July 15
October – DecemberSeptember 15October 15

Sewer accounts paid after the due date are charged a 10% fee.  For example, a late $65 sewer charge is assessed a $6.50 per REU penalty.  Please note that failure to receive a sewer bill does not waive penalty charges.  Any unpaid sewer charges from the Sept. 15, 2008 billing through the June 15, 2009 billing will appear on the Dec. 1, 2009 tax bill.

If you would like to have your sewer payment automatically withdrawn from you bank account, see "Online Services" above.

SCCMUA operates and maintains the sanitary sewer system.  If you have a sewer back-up, immediately notify SCCMUA at 517-669-8311 or call 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatch after hours.  If a problem within the sewer system is found, SCCMUA is the agency responsible for determining the cause, coordinating claims, and keeping customers informed.

Treasurer's Duties

State statute requires township treasurers to collect real and personal property taxes, account for township receipts and expenditures, issue township checks, deposit township revenues in approved depositories, invest township funds in approved investment vehicles and collect delinquent personal property tax.

Township treasurers collect taxes on behalf of entities other than the township itself.  In Bath Township, the treasurer collects taxes for Bath, Haslett, East Lansing and Laingsburg School Districts, according to each district’s tax rate.  Bath Township also collects taxes for Clinton County, Lansing Community College, Clinton County Transit, Clinton County RESA, Ingham County ISD and the State of Michigan.  Money collected on behalf of other entities is regularly disbursed.  Special assessments for drains and street lights are also collected by the township treasurer.
